    The US EPA issued a notice of intent to cancel (NOIC) to cancel the registration of the last three chlorpyrifos products containing food under Gharda
    , India.

    The three products are:

    ·         Chlorpyrifos Technical(EPA Reg.
    No.
    93182-3)

    ·         Pilot 4E Chlorpyrifos Agricultural Insecticide(EPA Reg.
    No.
    93182-7)

    ·         Pilot 15G Chlorpyrifos Agricultural Insecticide(EPA Reg.
    No.
    93182-8)

    Under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), the cancellation of these three products will take effect within
    30 days of the issuance of the NOIC if the registrant or other relevant person does not take any action.

    NOIC Notice

    Chlorpyrifos is an organophosphorus insecticide used in crops including soybeans, fruit and nut trees, broccoli, and cauliflower, but because chlorpyrifos inhibits acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the body, leading to neurotoxicity, the use of chlorpyrifos has been declining
    .

    In February, the EPA rejected all objections to eliminating the current maximum residue limits for chlorpyrifos, and all products containing chlorpyrifos would no longer be used for food purposes
    .

    · As of October, the EPA had received voluntary cancellation of 16 chlorpyrifos product registrations containing food uses by six companies
    .

    · By December, the EPA had received 14 product deregistration applications and three end-of-use applications
    .

    So far, only 3 related products of Gharda have not applied for deregistration
    .
    With the EPA's cancellation notice, there will no longer be any registrations of chlorpyrifos products containing food use in the United States
    .

    EPA plans for the next step

    The EPA is conducting a registration review of non-food uses of chlorpyrifos and may propose additional mitigation measures to reduce impacts
    on human health and ecological risks.

    According to data from 2012 to 2018, chlorpyrifos food uses accounted for 95%
    of registered chlorpyrifos products.
    In 2020, the EPA released data on chlorpyrifos use in the United States, and chlorpyrifos use in 2018 is estimated at 5,000,000 pounds
    .

    EPA conducts benefit analysis on crops using chlorpyrifos, and provides alternative pesticides for different crops, including:

    · pyrethroid insecticides (e.
    g.
    , bifenthrin, cyhalothrin, etc.
    )

    · Neonicotinoid insecticides (e.
    g.
    acetamiprid, imidacloprid, etc.
    )

    · Insect growth regulators (e.
    g.
    methoxyfenamide, pyriproprane, etc.
    )

    · Diamide insecticides (e.
    g.
    , chlorantranilamide)
