The Dutch government said on Wednesday that it will slow gas production from small gas fields and stop looking for new gas fields
onshore in the coming years as natural gas production from the giant Groningen gas field will be phased out.
As part of its efforts to reduce the dangers posed by small but destructive earthquakes, the Norwegian government decided in March to gradually slow down gas production
from the Groningen atmospheric field, once Europe's largest gas field, by 2030.
Natural gas production from 240 small gas fields in the Netherlands will fall to about 15 billion cubic meters by 2020, from 20 billion cubic meters
this year, the Dutch government's economy ministry said on Wednesday.
As reserves from existing gas fields will be depleted and the search for new onshore fields will stop, annual gas production in the Netherlands is expected to decline to 5 to 10 billion cubic meters by 2030 and further decline
by 2050.
Dutch Economy Minister Eric said in a statement a few days ago: "We will do our best to reduce the demand
for natural gas by providing affordable and sustainable energy.
" Natural gas is only extracted if necessary and safe
.
