The Dutch government plans to build five new offshore wind farms that are expected to generate 7 gigawatts (GW) of electricity
between 2024 and 2030.
The Netherlands lags behind other European countries in renewable energy investment and has launched a plan to accelerate renewable energy projects, including tenders for 4.
5GW of offshore wind farms during 2023
.
The Dutch government has limited the amount of natural gas produced by the earthquake in the Groningen offshore field and wants to continue to reduce production as part of
the reduction plan.
"Our industry will have a competitive advantage as renewable energy becomes increasingly affordable," the government said in a statement, adding that the move would also help related industries, including transportation, storage and conversion to other forms of energy, such as hydrogen
.
" The projects will bring up to 20 billion euros ($24.
9 billion) in investment and create 10,000 jobs
.
”
Once completed, the Netherlands will have 115 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity, enough to meet 40%
of the country's electricity needs.
Last week, Sweden's Vattenfall won a contract to build a 700-megawatt wind farm
off the Dutch coast without receiving any subsidies.
