According to the timetable agreed at the first meeting of the Czech Coal Committee on Monday, the Czech Republic should complete the development of a coal phase-out plan by the end of September 2020

Industry and Trade Minister Karel Havlicek confirmed the timeline, adding at a news conference that the 19-member committee agreed to set up three subcommittees to discuss the timing of coal phase-out, including ensuing legislative measures and regional impact mitigation policies in the country's
three main coal-mining regions.
Havlicek added that coal plants will be assessed gradually as part of an overall assessment of the phase-out schedule
Coal-fired power plants generated 47 percent of electricity in the Czech Republic last year, with nuclear power accounting for 33 percent
, according to the country's energy regulator.
With Czech renewable energy progress slow in recent years, plans to build new nuclear reactors far behind schedule, and the first new capacity additions unlikely to start operating before 2035-2040, the country's dependence on fossil fuels remains high
