Coal-gas-based combined power generation (IGCC) is Japan's leading global power generation technology, which can achieve the same power generation efficiency
as liquefied natural gas-fueled thermal power generation.
Using cheaper coal for fuel can reduce carbon dioxide emissions
.
Currently, Japan is working to promote the practical application
of this technology.
It is reported that Fukushima has officially decided to build two state-of-the-art coal-fired power plants
.
A "Hirono Thermal Power Station" of Tokyo Electric Power Company in Hirono Town, on the Pacific coast, is being built next to the coal thermal power generation that has already been built
.
Construction of the coal pile began in April 2015 and will be operational in September 2121
.
The other is the "Belai Power Station"
located in the Iwa-like city of Tokiwa on the Pacific coast.
This is a thermal power plant jointly operated by TEPCO and Tohoku Electric Power Company, and one of the five currently in operation is the first power generation facility
in Japan to commercialize IGCC.
The IGCC has already built a power generation capacity of 250,000 kilowatts, and after the establishment of two new buildings, it will reach 540,000 kilowatts
through the IGCC.
The maintenance of the equipment already under construction at the Bego Power Station has been suspended, and the town of Hirono is expected to start operations
as early as September 2020.
It entered the trial operation period
in September 2019.
When the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games are held, the most advanced IGCC will start construction
in Fukushima.
The IGCC demonstration facility built in Fukushima Prefecture is a major public-private project
as part of the revitalization plan promoted by the Japanese government and Fukushima Prefecture.
At the peak of the construction project, the two buildings can create 2,000 jobs
per day.
From the environmental impact assessment conducted before the project to the operation of power generation equipment in the future, it is expected to create economic benefits
of about 160 billion yen.
It is also attracting attention
in power generation technology.
The state has formulated a circuit map for new thermal power generation, and the IGCC is regarded as the core technology
of coal thermal power.
Compared to the current 40% increase in the power generation effect of "supercritical pressure", which is currently the most advanced coal thermal power, it is possible to increase it by 50% through
IGCC.
Power generation efficiency has increased, fuel bills have been reduced, and CO2 emissions have also been reduced
.
Fukushima's new IGCC will not only naturalize coal, but also use the "air-blown IGCC" method
of mixing oxygen and nitrogen.
IGCC operating at the power station also uses the air-blown type
.
Through the new IGCC in Fukushima, power generation efficiency is expected to increase by more than 50% and transmission efficiency by 48%.
