The Caribbean aims to be the world's first climate-smart region
On August 1, Usain Bolt helped launch the Caribbean Climate Intelligence Accelerator in Jamaica
.
It is a coalition
of 26 countries and more than 40 private and public sector partners.
The coalition announced that the $50,000 annual "Speed Prize" will be awarded to the country that has made the
most progress in building a clean and green Caribbean.
The plan aims to fast-track climate action
across the region by investing in renewable energy, developing sustainable cities, oceans and transport.
Both the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank have made commitments of $1 million annually over a three-year period to accelerate and operationalize the program
.
An anonymous entrepreneur is investing $2 million to support the Belize government's marine conservation efforts, marine advocacy in the Caribbean, and business solutions
deployed by businesses.
Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Hollens said: "Climate intelligence means putting the people of the Caribbean at the centre of all of us to protect them from the challenges of
climate change.
The Caribbean Climate Intelligence Accelerator program will also encourage job creation, social inclusion and economic growth
