The Asian Development Bank has signed an agreement with Bangladesh to provide a US$357 million loan and US$7.
5 million in assistance
for its power infrastructure construction.
Specifically, the loan will be used for the expansion of the transmission grid in the Southwest region, including 126 km of transmission lines from Barisal to Faridpur and 104 km of transmission lines from Bogra to Rohanpur, as well as associated substations and transformers
.
The new transmission lines will feature advanced high-temperature conductors that can transmit more power
with less energy loss.
These conductors also help reduce CO2 emissions
.
The Japan Joint Credit Facility Fund will provide $7 million in assistance for new high-tech energy-efficient conductors, while $500,000 from South Korea's eAsia and Knowledge Partnership Gund will promote gender-equal and socially inclusive growth
.
"Bangladesh's power sector has grown rapidly in recent years, but more investment is needed to meet the growing demand for electricity in a rapidly growing economy," Parkash said, "ADB's assistance aims to consolidate the current rapid growth and development rate
by improving the efficiency, reliability, and environmental friendliness of the generation, transmission, and distribution systems.
" ”
"The project will facilitate business expansion and create jobs for local communities, including the poor and socially disadvantaged in the southern and western regions of Bangladesh," Parkash added
