Claro Colombia, a subsidiary of America Movil, a telecommunications company in the Americas, has announced that it has started construction of an extension of the America Movil submarine cable system AMX-1 to connect to the Caribbean island
of San Andres.
According to reports, the extension line has a total length of 727 kilometers and a deployment cost of $15 million
.
The CEO of Claro Colombia said the construction of the extension line will provide information technology support
to the island's residents as well as tourism, trade, health, education and government departments.
It will also strengthen connectivity resilience on the island, where telecommunications services were destroyed by Hurricane Aita in November 2020, and strengthen its toll-free public access points
.
The 17,800-kilometer-long AMX-1 submarine cable landed in Cancun (Mexico) in December 2013 and was commissioned shortly thereafter
.
Built by Alcatel-Lucent (now Alcatel Submarine Networks, or ASN), the $500 million submarine cable is designed for 100G capacity and connects North and Central America with the southern tip of South America, passing through Miami and Jacksonville (USA), Barranquilla and Cartagena (Colombia), El Salvador and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Puerto Plata (Dominican Republic), Barranquilla and Cartagena (Colombia), Cancun (Mexico), San Juan (Puerto Rico) and Puerto Barrios (Guatemala).
