The fibre optic network project in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is being carried out at a rapid pace and will boost trade, tourism and information technology (IT) development
in the region.
The 820 km of cable from Hongchirap to Rawalpindi cost $44 million and has already cost $28.
3 million.
Pakistan's Ministry of Planning and Development recently revealed that the project was completed in December 2018, but may be completed
earlier.
It is reported that the optical fiber network project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor aims to connect a number of major cities
in Pakistan.
The project will play a key role in establishing alternative international connectivity between Pakistan and China and the rest of the world, particularly in Gilgit Baltistan, providing 3G and 4G services, on par
with existing services in the rest of the country.
In essence, the project also helps boost key revenues, boost trade, tourism and IT development in the region, and create economic and employment
opportunities for locals along the deployed areas.
