Texas continues to dominate the country's wind energy production, adding far more electricity than any other state last year, and more wind power installed capacity than five other states
, according to the report.
Not only did the state take advantage of strong winds in West Texas, but it became the pinnacle
of wind power generation by building transmissions to shift power from remote areas to population areas in the state.
At the same time, the state's wind energy production is only expected to increase and provide more and more national power, as advanced technology allows wind turbines to generate at lower wind speeds and improved weather forecasts can more easily integrate them into the
grid.
The director of the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at the Department of Energy said, "The average capacity factor of new wind facilities has risen to more than
40%.
They get more output
.
They do a better job of converting wind into usable energy, and therefore improve economic efficiency
.
”
Last year, Texas added more than 2,300 megawatts of wind power, nearly three times as much as Oklahoma, which added about 850 megawatts
of wind power.
At the end of 2017, Texas had more than 22,000 megawatts of wind power, more than three times the 7,500 megawatts in Oklahoma and the second-highest wind capacity
in the nation.
