Tesla is moving forward with plans to build a lithium smelter along the Texas Gulf Coast to gain more control
over the EV battery supply chain.
On Wednesday, CEO Elon Musk confirmed the move
while answering questions from analysts on a conference call about the progress of the company's new 4680 battery technology development.
The Austin, Texas-based company has been considering the project for months, but has previously been considering at least one other location
in Louisiana.
The company has told state regulators it plans to build a battery-grade lithium hydroxide refining facility near Corpus Christi to process raw ore into feedstock
more suitable for production.
Musk called the price of lithium "ridiculously expensive" and has repeatedly encouraged the start of refining lithium to ease supply bottlenecks
for key materials used in lithium-ion batteries.
