According to Japanese media outlet Nikkan, Panasonic will increase the production of 2170 batteries at its Gigafactory Gigafactory by more than
30% by the end of 2018 as demand for Tesla's Model 3 increases.
According to reports, in order to increase production, Panasonic will add three lithium-ion battery production lines at the Gigafactory, for a total of 13 production lines
.
This is necessary for Panasonic to support Tesla's demand rate
of 5,000 Model 3s per week.
The new line also has 30 percent more capacity than
Gigafactory's existing line.
Model 3 production has been a bottleneck so far, and has led to restrictions on Gigafactory's battery, module and packaging production so as not to exceed the battery requirements for vehicles manufactured at Tesla's Fremont factory and Tesla Energy Powerwalls and Powerpacks
produced at Gigafactory.
But Nikkan said that in order to meet the high demand rate of 5,000 Model 3 units per week, "Panasonic was forced to respond, for example, by converting batteries such as home batteries to the batteries
required for Model 3.
" ”
The new production line allows Panasonic to produce enough batteries to meet the current Tesla Model 3 needs without having to disassemble any Tesla energy products
.
They gave Panasonic the ability to produce the full 35GWh of its original estimate to support the expected Tesla Model 3 production rate
of 5,000 units per week.
Tesla initially expected the Gigafactory to have a total capacity of 35 GWh with a total investment of $5 billion
.
Although, after completing a more detailed design, it is expected to far exceed these estimates
in terms of production capacity and capital expenditure.
As a strategic partner operating the Gigafactory, Panasonic has a share of about 30%
of the investment.
In addition, Panasonic may also work with Tesla again on the Tesla Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, but this is yet to be confirmed
.
Tesla is also reportedly in talks with Germany and the Netherlands about its fourth Gigafactory factory, which will serve
the European market.
