Germany's grid will be boosted by the Elbekreuzung 2 project, which will quadruple the transmission capacity
on Europe's tallest power tower.
That is, once completed, developer Tente will have a total transmission capacity of 9.
6 GW
.
According to reports, the 380 kV Elbekreuzung 2 high-voltage transmission project will cross the Elbe River north of the Port of Hamburg, connecting the wind-rich German states of Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein
.
The Elbekreuzung 2 high-voltage transmission system is part of Germany's high-voltage grid stretching from the Danish border to the Austrian border, and the grid transformation project completed by the end of 2019 is crucial
to alleviate north-south bottlenecks within the German grid.
At present, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has declared grid expansion a top priority
for the current government as the rapid expansion of wind power in the north and the nuclear withdrawal plan are affecting the power supply situation in the south.
Energy ministers from Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein also urged the federal government at the groundbreaking ceremony to accelerate grid expansion and ease pressure on wind power growth in so-called "grid saturation" areas along the North Sea coast
.
The head of Germany's federal grid regulator, BNetzA, warned earlier this year that pressure to split Germany's single electricity price zone could re-emerge
in 2025 if the country fails to expand the grid through a major new north-south power link enough to ease internal bottlenecks.
In March, the European Commission launched an antitrust case to investigate whether Tenter's ability to
restrict borders in violation of EU competition rules.
In response, Tent offered to increase the capacity of the proposal currently under negotiation to 1,300 megawatts, and the available cross-border power trading capacity on the German-Danish border has already increased to around
750 megawatts this winter.
