Tata Steel says the new technology can cut emissions in half in steel production
The process, called HIsarna, involves injecting iron ore into the top of the reactor, where it is liquefied and coal is injected, reducing the energy-consuming steps
required in the process.
Typically, materials must be pretreated
in separate coke, sintering, or pellet plants.
Tata Steel has successfully tested this new technological approach at a plant in the Netherlands, using scrap and biomass energy to reduce the amount of
virgin resources required.
This technology can be introduced on an industrial scale, allowing the production of liquid iron
20 times more.
