Tanzania's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tanzania Electricity Supply Corporation (TANESCO) to expand broadband connectivity
across the country.
Under the agreement, the state-owned Tanzania Telecommunications Company will use TANESCO's power infrastructure to roll out fibre broadband connectivity
.
Currently, the country's national fibre network stretches 8,319 kilometers and connects 21 regional capitals, but the agreement is expected to increase infrastructure length by 4,450 kilometers and connect the remaining 10 districts, more than
double the 1,880 kilometers planned for the 2021/22 financial year.
At present, Tanzania has 29.
15 million Internet users, most of whom access the Internet
through mobile phones.
However, the cost per Mbps is also relatively high, at $
5.
Governments and experts hope the new broadband will lower the cost
of internet across the country.
"We want every home with electricity to have access to the internet," said Energy Minister Dr.
Medard Kalemani, adding that it is time
for every home to connect the internet, TV and mobile phone to the national broadband.
"It's a more efficient way, simple and just to expand broadband connectivity," he said, noting that through the new partnership, Tanesco will also use some of the infrastructure TTCL has already installed to power
the country.
Tanesco is currently connecting dozens of areas to the national grid
by building large distribution lines.
TTCL will also connect the public to national broadband services
using infrastructure including Iringa 680km line, Somangafungu 520km line, Geita 422km line, Tabora 398km and Mpanda 392km line.
