SunPower, a large U.
S.
solar panel maker, announced on May 23 that it has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA)
with the Metro de Santiago Metro in Chile to supply 300GWh of clean electricity per year.
Under the agreement, the San Diego Metro is expected to be the world's first public transit agency to run almost entirely on solar energy
.
The Santiago Metro is the main means of transportation for citizens in Santiago, the capital of Chile, and is now used by 2.
2 million people every day
.
The electricity supplied to the Santiago Metro comes from a 100MW (AC) photovoltaic plant
called the "El Pelícano Solar Project".
The power station will be built near
the towns of La Higuera in the Coquimbo region and Vallenar in the Atacama region.
Construction is scheduled to begin within 2016 and start operation
within 2017.
SunPower is responsible for the design, construction, and post-completion operation and maintenance
of million-dollar PV plants.
By adopting the company's modular photovoltaic power generation system, SunPower Oasis, it is said that the construction period and cost
will be shortened.
The system is equipped with a solar panel cleaning function based on robot technology, which is expected to save 75% of water and improve power generation performance by up to 15%
compared to previous million-dollar photovoltaic power plants.
