Food intolerance refers to a complex allergic disease.
The human immune system regards certain or multiple foods that enter the human body as harmful substances, thereby producing an excessive protective immune response against these substances.
Common diagnostic methods will not bring any conclusive results for patients.
Endoscopy also often indicates that there is no obvious problem with the intestinal wall.
These patients have often suffered from it and have imposed strict diets on themselves, making them very limited in food choices, which may lead to malnutrition and physical weakness over time.
In a recent study, researchers successfully proved that, compared with other methods, differential analysis of intestinal tissue is the most sensitive and reliable method for proving suspected food intolerance.
Tissue-associated immunoglobulin E (IgE, a special antibody of the body's immune system) and high levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α, a signal substance of the immune system involved in the inflammatory process) are directly related to food allergy.
Patients with unexplained food intolerance have low levels of tissue-related IgE and TNF-α, but high levels of interferon-f, a protein formed at the site of inflammation.
The researchers explained that this indicates a slight inflammation of the intestinal lining.
This is the first time that unexplained food intolerance can be proved to be based on the inflammatory reaction in the intestinal lining.
The researchers stated, “If no abnormalities are found after the endoscopic examination of the intestines, a more detailed investigation of the intestinal tissue samples should be conducted to determine whether there is evidence of inflammation and thus food intolerance.
