A team of four masters students from UCL's Bartlett School of Architecture have designed and 3D printed a novel multi-material building panel

    .

Called Metaplas, the project uses a combination of rigid and flexible recyclable polymers to create a geometric architectural folded panel through 3D printing

The launch of the Metaplas project aims to design a multi-material structure that combines incremental design, structural feasibility and 3D printing capabilities

    .

The folding patterns themselves were generated using a custom computational tool that relies on structural analysis

    .

Taking it a step further, the students also looked into incorporating thermochromic polymers into panel designs

During the concept stage, students also focused on using a decentralized digital manufacturing network

    .

For example, in the case of Euston Station, students identified and mapped several material recycling and 3D printing facilities within a defined radius from the station

    .
If the rendered project does come to fruition, this decentralized network of 3D printing will be used to fabricate all of the individual panels in the structure

    .
This will play a role in boosting the local economy, but also a more ecological and ethical way of production, as transport distances and costs will be greatly reduced

    .

The Bartlett team consists of Betty Chavez Angeles, Prapatsorn Lertluechachai, Wisnu Hardiansyah and Marwah Osama
    .

The connection between function and aesthetics is the key advantage of rapid prototyping manufacturing in the field of construction
    .
Earlier this month, Dutch 3D printing service Royal3D printed a modular and flexible workspace pavilion in Rotterdam's manufacturing district

    .
R-IGLO, built for the Port of Rotterdam Authority, was made using recycled PET waste

    .
The polymer pod is currently a pilot project, but may appear in other buildings in the Port Authority's real estate division in the future

    .

Elsewhere, architectural firm Branch Technology recently 3D printed the first building exterior for a financial institution in Chattanooga, Tennessee
    .
The building features the Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union's iconic wave branding into the design itself, and was fabricated using the company's proprietary robotic arm-based cellular fabrication (C-Fab) 3D printing technology
