Epidemiological characteristics of cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) are reported to be changing.
the need for long-term national data to confirm this change, researchers analyzed data on CVT cases in Finland between 2005 and 2014 in a recent study published inStroke, an authoritative journal in the field of cardiovascular disease.
researchers obtained all patients admitted to acute CVT from mandatory registries covering the Finnish mainland, including those aged ≥ 18.
identified 563 CVT patients (56.5 percent female).
incidence rate per year was 1.32 per 100,000 (95 per cent CI was 1.21-1.43), with an annual growth rate of 5.0 per cent.
among people under 55 years of age, the incidence rate is 0.92 per 100,000 (0.76-1.10) for men and 1.65 per 100,000 for women (1 .43-1.89), while among persons over 55 years of age, the incidence rate is 1.61 (1.34-1.91) for men and 1.17 (0.96-1.41) for women.
hospitalization rate was 2.1 per cent, with no gender difference.
mortality rate in the first year was 7.9 per cent.
men (adjusted risk ratio of 1.61 (1.09-2.38)) and older patients had higher long-term mortality rates (1.95 (1.69-2.24) per 10 years of age).
, the total incidence of CVT in Finland is similar to reported in the Netherlands and Australia.
hospitalization rate increased by 5.0 per cent per year, while the hospital mortality rate was lower.
rates vary significantly between men and women.
-term mortality increases with age and is higher for men.
