Starbucks recently launched a trial version of its NextGen Cup, which will be piloted in select stores using sustainable cups selected in the NextGen Cup Challenge
.
The trial, part of the NextGen Cup challenge, will feature cups lined with biodegradable polysuccinic acid (BioPBS) plastic at select Starbucks stores in Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco, New York and London
.
The trial was designed to test the customer's in-store experience to see if there was a significant difference in performance between the "next-generation cup" and the paper cups currently used in Starbucks stores
.
The Next Generation Cup Challenge, co-founded by Starbucks and McDonald's in 2018, aims to find innovative solutions for single-use cups
.
In February 2019, the "New Generation Cup" challenge announced 12 winners, and then Starbucks conducted research and evaluation on the quality and performance of the winning cups, and determined that one of the winning solutions would be implemented in some stores
.
Starbucks is currently working with closed-loop partners and the NextGen consortium to continue testing various winning scenarios, including further testing of BioPBS-lined cups to ensure better recyclability than current cups
