In Germany, the sports scene is booming, and there are more cyclists on the streets than ever before
.
Cycling is popular, whether powered or not, with 85% of participants in a 2020 Fahrrad-Monitor survey saying fitness is the reason they cycle, while more than two-thirds focus on on environmental protection
.
At the same time, there is a growing demand for high-quality equipment that will positively impact the riding experience
.
Topping the list of these products: cycling shorts
.
The garment had to be stylish, be made of functional materials and, most importantly, have clever padding
.
Whether it's a long trip or a race, to keep a bike tour from turning into a hell of a ride, Munich-based SQlab has opted for supersoft TPE as the padding for its new shorts
.
Creates a high-quality, ergonomic, durable pant pad—so you can focus on enjoying your bike
.
SQlab's priority in product development is ergonomics and health while riding
.
These goals keep the company's research and development at a high level and keep moving forward
.
To take the quality to the next level, the team was looking for a very soft thermoplastic elastomer (TPE)
.
The focus is also on shear, which is a major factor in riding comfort
.
High-quality TPE distributes power evenly, reducing stress during strenuous or long bike rides
.
Other requirements are very good processability, skin tolerance and excellent quality over the life of the product
.
While these requirements, each taken individually, can be met using existing TPEs, the challenge is to find a material that satisfies all factors
.
KRAIBURG TPE's new generation of ultra-soft TPEs has a hardness range of 30 to 50 Shore 00 or 45 to 70 VLRH (Very Low Rubber Hardness), with good mechanical properties and excellent compressive properties at room temperature
.
What makes this product stand out compared to other similar solutions is the comfort level, even in tight conditions
.
Additionally, these materials can be processed using injection molding and 3D printing
.
The material has also been tested according to ISO 10993-10 (skin irritation) and has received additional certifications, meeting some additional criteria:
- EN 71
- Color can be customized
- Compliant with REACH and RoHS
Lukas Bucht from SQlab's Testing and Technical Research Department concluded: "The cooperation with KRAIBURG TPE contributed to the success of this project
.
From planning to testing to fine-tuning of the final product, we were well supported and advised
.
The product is clearly visually appealing and wearable
.
In the padding of the ONE10 and ONE11 SQ shorts, we use a trusted TPE that we trust and our customers will be able to enjoy for the long haul
.
"
KRAIBURG TPE offers a wide range of ultra-soft TPEs in order to be able to offer the best solution for different requirements
.
The collection is now available worldwide
