Spain recently announced the closure of all coal-fired power plants by 2030 in order to achieve net-zero emissions
as soon as possible.
With abundant sunshine, advantageous wind resources and vast plains, Spain is transforming its energy system to rely on renewable energy and expects to close 85%
of its total coal capacity by 2022.
The United States and the European Union pledged to develop green technologies last month, but did not set a firm end date
for coal burning.
Teresa Ribera, Spain's energy and environment minister, has long argued that coal will fade away
as the cost of emission permits climbs and other sources become cheaper.
A national climate plan submitted to Brussels last year projected a reduction in coal capacity to zero
by 2030.
In a statement on Wednesday, Ribera said: "We need to take concrete steps to phase out global coal power
at COP26 in Glasgow.
