Spain and Morocco have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at developing a third power interconnection project
between the two countries.
The agreement, signed by the two heads of state last week, will strengthen the only existing electricity connection
between continental Europe and the African continent.
The two sides did not elaborate on the details of the memorandum of understanding, but the two sides recently discussed increasing existing interconnect capacity by 700 megawatts
.
According to Spanish grid operator Red Electrica, the commercial interconnection capacity between the two countries is 600 MW from Morocco to Spain and 900 MW from Spain to Morocco, respectively
.
The first interconnection project between the two countries began in
1996.
In 2006, the two sides built a second interconnection system, and it is in the market interest
of both sides to promote interconnection.
Spain provides Morocco with about 15% of its annual electricity demand, but has recently seen reverse output
since Morocco's 1.
4 GW Safi coal-fired power plant was commissioned last December.
What's more, grand plans to harness Morocco's abundant solar resources and export them to Europe will rely on this transcontinental grid connection
