South Korea's SK Innovation's $1.
7 billion new car battery production plant in Georgia, USA, officially broke ground on Tuesday
.
The plant will supply batteries for electric vehicles, and the company expects to bring 2,000 jobs
in Jackson County, northeast of Atlanta.
According to reports, the plant will be put into operation in batches and is expected to achieve full capacity operation by 2025, when its annual production capacity can meet the battery demand
of 250,000 electric vehicles.
SK said the plant will initially supply batteries
for Volkswagen's electric vehicles produced at Chattanooga.
The plant will have a production capacity of 10 gigawatts, and this measurement represents the total power generation of the batteries expected to be produced each year
.
"Volkswagen is doing business in Tennessee; Alabama is home to companies such as Daimler (the parent company of Mercedes-Benz) and Hyundai," Jun Kim, president and CEO of SK Innovation, said Monday.
There is also Kia Motors in Georgia
.
Further north, there are large car manufacturers such as Ford
.
This is where
the demand is concentrated.
”
Georgia Gov.
Brian Kemp welcomed the effort, saying the plant would create jobs
in northeastern Georgia.
"It's an exciting day not only for all of us, but for all of us who work hard at Georgia as they see opportunities
in the future.
"
When Ford closed its Hapeville assembly plant in 2006 and General Motors closed its Doraville plant in 2008, Georgia lost its domestic auto plant
.
But in 2009, Kia helped close that loophole by opening a $1.
2 billion factory at West Point, which now makes Sorento, SUVs and Optima sedans
.
As the company seeks to gain a supply chain and production foothold in the world's second-largest automotive market and ease the ups and downs of global trade, the state has also landed many auto parts suppliers
