Recently, South Korea's Ministry of Energy said it will increase incentives for offshore wind farm operators and reduce subsidies for biomass producers to promote more environmentally friendly energy
.
South Korea will increase incentives for offshore wind farm operators
The Department of Trade, Industry and Energy said incentives for renewables will be adjusted based on environmental impact and contribution to helping meet clean energy targets
.
Under the new system, the Department of Energy will reduce subsidies
for solid recycled fuels.
Solid recycled fuels are fuels produced from shredded and dehydrated biodegradable waste and recycled materials, and are considered less environmentally friendly
as an alternative source of fossil fuels than wind and solar.
The Department of Energy said it would also require large power operators to increase the proportion of renewable energy above a certain level to promote the use
of environmentally friendly resources.
The latest plan is to increase the share of renewable energy to 20% by 2030 from the current 7%, which will drive clean energy production to 63.
8 GW
in the target year.
South Korea has been seeking to shift its focus from coal and nuclear to renewable energy to combat worsening air pollution and address public safety concerns
at aging atomic power plants.
