South Africa plans to launch three rounds of renewable energy purchases in 2021, totaling 6,800 megawatts (MW) and 5,000 MW of new coal power, natural gas and energy storage capacity
.
South Africa, Africa's most industrialized country, relies heavily on coal-fired power generation, but plans to move towards more diversified sources
of power generation.
Industry sources say domestic power supply is often disrupted by various technical failures or insufficient power supply, which also limits investment in South Africa and hinders economic growth
.
South Africa's national power company, Eskom, has long promised to increase power generation and improve supply, but progress has been slow, compounded by the 2020 pandemic
.
According to local media, South Africa plans to launch the first round of renewable energy project tenders in January or February, targeting 2,600 megawatts
of wind and solar power capacity.
By August 2021, a second round of 2,600 MW renewable energy tenders will be launched, followed by a third round of tenders in January or February of the following year, with a target of 1,600 MW
.
In addition, it is expected to launch a tender for about 500 MW of energy storage in September, and a tender
for 1,500 MW of coal power and 3,000 MW of natural gas power generation around December.
South Africa plans to improve the diversity and stability
of domestic electricity supply by increasing power generation, especially from renewable sources.
However, coal is the main source of pollution, and with increasing environmental concerns, coal power tenders will face great uncertainty, and banks are gradually suspending loan financing services for coal power projects
