Solvay expands its diverse portfolio of high-performance polyphthalamide (PPA) compounds with Amodel® Bios, a new family of partially bio-based long-chain PPAs especially suitable for demanding electrical applications in electric vehicles and electronic applications
.
In addition to renewable feedstock components from non-food competing sources, it is produced using 100% renewable electricity, reducing its global warming potential (GWP) to levels well below that of other bio-PPAs
.
Solvay's Amodel® Bios PPA has a long history of PPA innovation, combining this superior sustainability with the outstanding performance of components in e-motors, power electronics and other high-end electrical systems
.
Most notably, it offers the highest glass transition temperature of 135°C and melting point of 315°C of any biobased PPA on the market
.
Specifically designed for injection molding, this product is ideal for reflow soldering surface mount devices (SMDs) without blistering and cooling components in power electronics circuits, including fluid connectors
.
In addition, the new polymer has limited hygroscopicity compared to standard PPA, and therefore has high dimensional stability with a lower risk of stress corrosion, which is especially important for miniaturized electrical connectors
.
Amodel® Bios PPA also has excellent impact strength, even with a UL94 V0 halogen-free flame retardant rating, making it ideal for colorable applications
.
In addition, there is high elongation, weld line strength and excellent surface aesthetics
.
"As we continue to drive innovation in PPAs to meet the higher performance demands of the electric vehicle space, the launch of Amodel® Bios PPA also demonstrates Solvay's commitment to helping customers achieve their ambitious sustainability goals, which is in line with our' a Earth',
" said Brian Baleno, Head of Marketing, Solvay Specialty Polymers
.
In addition, with the support of Verisk Maplecroft, Solvay has taken another step forward in ensuring the sustainability of the new PPA range to assess the sustainable sourcing properties of materials
.
The consultancy's commodity risk services complement Solvay's internal supply chain risk assessment process, designed to identify and manage risks associated with numerous environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) issues
.
Amodel® Bios PPA is launched globally, initially in four grades differentiated by property descriptions tailored for structural, electrification and flame retardancy applications
.
