Japan's SoftBank Corporation (SoftBank) has announced that it plans to launch 5G commercial services on March 27, 2020, in order to compete for the dominance of next-generation mobile technology
.
However, according to Nikkei Asian Review, 5G penetration may be limited initially, and nationwide
coverage will not be available until 2021 at the earliest.
Mobile network operator MNO expects that since only a limited number of suitable base stations have been installed, it will be limited to certain areas
of Tokyo, Chiba, Osaka, Ishikawa, Aichi, Hiroshima and Fukuoka prefectures from the launch of 5G connections.
In addition, it stressed that even in the capital, 5G services will only be available in certain locations, such as within and near
Tokyo stations.
In addition, in terms of deploying new base stations, the range of 5G signals is more limited than 4G, while operators are also limited because they cannot use all the frequencies
allocated to them for fear of interference from satellite broadcasts.
The domestic subsidiary of Masayoshi Son's SoftBank Group Corp.
is expected to offer the new service for 1,000 yen ($9) a month, and will be offered for free for 24 months if registered before August 31, 2020
, Nikkei reported.
Looking ahead, SoftBank Group's mobile division aims to reach 90% of the population by the end of
2021.
This situation will be reinforced
if the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) starts allowing certain frequency bands to convert to 5G.
Given that SoftBank has a total of about 230,000 air base stations in Japan, the move would be welcome
.
Rivals NTT DOCOMO and KDDI are also expected to announce their own 5G plans shortly, with the new fourth-generation MNO Rakuten Mobile announcing full operations
starting in April.
