Floating and onshore nuclear power plants based on small modular reactors (SMRs) present huge sustainable development opportunities
for the entire world, including India.
In an interview, Rusatom Overseas, vice president of Rosatom's overseas company, emphasized the important role
of small reactors in phasing out coal-fired power plants.
The executive said floating and onshore power plants in small modular reactors (SMRs) open up tremendous sustainability opportunities
around the world.
The company has successfully deployed the world's first floating NPP
in the Arctic.
Home to 4 million people in the Arctic Circle, the region relies heavily on fossil fuels
for its energy supply.
Currently, they are mainly coal and oil, which have an extremely negative impact
on the environment.
Air and water pollution damage valuable ecosystems, leading to reduced human life expectancy and the complete extinction
of certain species and organisms.
SMR can help mitigate negative effects and hopefully eliminate them
.
With small nuclear reactors, the Arctic could reach "net zero"
emissions as early as 2040.
Half of these 4 million people live in Russia
.
Most settlements in the Far North are inaccessible to the grid and are isolated "energy islands"
isolated from the national grid.
The tiny Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant will replace the Chaunskaya power plant
, which currently operates by burning lignite, perhaps the most harmful fuel.
The reactor is expected to be connected to the grid in
2027.
