A few days ago, SK Innovation CEO Jun Kim announced plans to increase investment to $5 billion to build a battery factory
in Georgia, USA.
A month ago, SK Innovation pledged to spend $1.
67 billion to build a battery manufacturing plant
in Georgia.
SK Innovation said it will start construction
of its Commerce plant in Georgia this year.
When completed, it will employ 2,000 workers and produce the equivalent of 9.
8 gigawatt-hours of lithium-ion batteries
per year.
According to the plan, the new plant will be completed
in 2022.
SK Innovation supplies car batteries
for Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai and Kia.
Volkswagen also named SK Innovation one of
its battery suppliers for its upcoming EV ID brand.
Currently, Hyundai and Mercedes operate assembly plants
in Alabama.
The same goes for
Honda.
Mazda and Toyota have also broken ground at a joint plant in Alabama
.
Kia has a plant in Georgia, while Volkswagen has an assembly plant
in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Volkswagen said it was looking for a place to build another plant in the United States, but not necessarily in Chattanooga
.
With the announcement of its intention to use SK Innovation batteries in its ID cars, perhaps the Georgia plant may service
it in the future.
Andrew Fulbrook, executive director of market research and analysis firm IHS Markit, said, "Our latest expectation is that, according to the latest projections, the capacity of global automotive traction batteries will need to reach more than 550 gigawatt-hours
by 2025.
”
According to Bloomberg, Jun Kim, head of SK Innovation, told the media at last week's CES show that the company plans to invest $10 billion worldwide in new battery manufacturing capacity
.
By 2025, it expects to produce 100 gigawatt-hours of batteries
per year.
The announcement appears to come in response to a major new order from Volkswagen, which said it had committed to buying $35 billion worth of batteries to comply with Europe's strict emissions regulations
.
This major commitment by SK Innovation will make it one of the major players in the global manufacturing industry, alongside
well-known companies such as LG Chem, Samsung SDI, Panasonic and CATL.
"We are confident that we can be a global leader," Jun Kim said
