Singapore's Vocus has received an order for a submarine cable system to build a cable system
between Australia's Darwin and the Tiwi Islands in the Northern Territory.
It is reported that the project will receive a US$8.
5 million grant from the Northern Territory government, and Vocus will be responsible for building, owning and operating (BOT model).
Vocus will build a new 60-kilometer submarine cable
between the Northwest Cable System (NWCS) branch and the Tiwi Islands.
This will be the first time communities on Melville and the Bathurst Islands have received "reliable, high-capacity and trusted fiber-to-mainland links.
"
Currently, NBN's satellite Sky Muster is one of
the service providers in the region.
Mobile and land-line telephones are currently connected to Darwin
via high-speed digital radio links.
In February, ABC reported that Tiwi Islanders had limited
access to internet and communications following the damage to the Telstra tower.
Through the acquisition of Nextgen Networks in 2016, NWCS was transferred to Vocus
.
Kevin Russell, CEO of the company, said: "The Tiwi Islands cable builds on
our extensive network infrastructure investment activity in the Northern Territory.
The new fibre optic connection offers a historic opportunity to replace existing sub-optimal microwave links to the mainland, removing capacity constraints and improving telecommunications services
in the Tiwi Islands.
”
According to the plan, the submarine cable system will be completed
by the end of 2019.
