Some of the building facilities of the Bishan Metro Depot will be powered by solar energy by the end of this year, making it the first solar-powered MTR depot
in the region.
The company will also explore the possibility
of solar power in subway stations.
In a joint statement with local solar supplier Sunseap Leasing, the two companies reached a cooperation agreement to build a 1 megawatt-peak (MWp) solar PV system at the Bishan Metro Depot to power
the MTR depot's buildings.
The announcement states that the system will not supply
power to subway tracks and trains.
The solar PV system will initially cover an area of 10,000 square meters on the roof of the Bishan Metro depot, and may later be expanded to supply 5 MW of peak power
.
Work to install the solar PV system will begin in the third quarter of this year and is expected to be commissioned
in October this year.
The possibility
of using solar power in subway stations will also be explored.
