The World Bank and the global off-grid lighting association GOGLA recently released an off-grid solar energy report that off-grid solar energy has developed strongly in recent years, with an annual market size of $1.
75 billion
.
So far, off-grid solar has provided lighting and other energy services
to nearly 420 million users around the world.
The report said that off-grid solar energy has achieved rapid development in the past decade, and since 2017, the off-grid solar industry revenue has grown at
an average annual rate of 30%.
With 840 million people still without access to electricity, more than 1 billion people without stable access to electricity, and more than 70 million farmers with solar energy for production, the potential off-grid market remains huge
.
The vast majority (more than 80%) of people without access to electricity live in sub-Saharan Africa
.
Within the region, the countries with the largest populations that are not available in absolute terms are Nigeria (89 million), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (68 million) and Ethiopia (61 million).
The report revealed that from 2010 to 2015, off-grid solar energy showed a rapid development trend, with an annual growth rate of 133%, until sales began to decline
in 2017.
From 2017 to 2019, the sales growth rate has been stable at about 10%, indicating that the market has matured
.
Since 2010, 180 million off-grid solar devices have been sold worldwide, and considering the product life cycle, about 84 million devices are still in use, benefiting more than 420 million people
.
Among them, solar home systems account for 17%, and sales have continued to grow
in recent years.
By the end of 2019, the off-grid solar industry attracted more than $1.
5 billion in investment and saw growth in the early years, largely due to the increasing prevalence of equity and debt
.
Still, it is not enough to serve
the available market opportunities.
"The off-grid solar sector contributes to universal access to electricity, and we will expand our support
to countries by helping them access innovative, financially sustainable solutions," said Riccardo Puliti, World Bank Head of Energy and Extractive Industries in Africa.
