Siemens Smart Infrastructure and German company Zukunftsenergie Nordostbayern GmbH (Zenob) have signed a letter of intent in Wincidel to build 100 MW of battery storage facilities
in German towns.
With a storage capacity of 200 MWh, the plant is designed to use surplus renewable energy and cover peak
demand in the grid.
The 5,000 square meter energy storage facility can provide electricity for 20,000 ordinary households for one year
.
The lithium-ion battery storage system will be provided
by Fluence, a joint venture between Siemens and AES.
Siemens will be responsible for project management, including the technical implementation concept, as well as the construction of medium-voltage switchgear systems and connection
to the high-voltage grid.
The LOI includes, among other things, the development of
financing.
"Power storage facilities are an important part of shaping the future of energy," said
Marco Krasser, Managing Director of SWW Wunsiedel, one of Zenob's partners.
"They can help stabilize the grid and make better use of energy
generated from renewable sources.
" They extract excess power from the grid and feed it back
when demand is high.
Smart energy storage technology will increase the supply
of green electricity at the local and national levels.
That's why
we're gradually expanding our production capacity.
”
Fluence's planned storage system will be able to store and release large amounts of green electricity
.
This will allow for more flexible use of clean energy outside of production hours, including during expensive peak load periods
.
"This also benefits upstream grid operators, as it offers greater flexibility to compensate for voltage fluctuations, which are becoming more common due to the expansion of renewable energy generation," says
Bernd Koch, Head of Technical Performance Service at Siemens Smart Infrastructure Germany.
"Turning large industrial plants on and off in the grid area requires a lot of electricity," says Andreas Schmuderer, Siemens project manager.
”
Last week, the construction of an 8.
75 MW hydrogen power plant in Wunsidel officially broke ground
.
Once operational in 2022, the facility will produce up to 1,350 tonnes of hydrogen
per year using only renewable energy sources such as solar or wind power.
