Recently, Dutch development banks FMO, Triodos Investment Management and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development have provided a long-term loan of 31.
6 million euros to finance the construction of Mongolia's first solar power plant, located in Sainshand
, in the Gobi Desert, 460 kilometers southeast.
The FMO, Triodos and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development will each lend one-third (€10.
5 million) of the total amount to the Desert Solar Plant1, which will enable a 30 MW power plant connected to the national grid or enough electricity to supply more than 27,000 Mongolian households
.
Back in 2012, FMO and EBRD previously collaborated to finance the 50 MW Salkhit wind farm, the first renewable energy project in Mongolia, where 80% of the country's electricity consumption is still generated
by highly polluting coal-fired power plants.
FMO Energy Director said: "At present, renewable energy accounts for a small proportion of Mongolia's overall energy supply, mainly based on the high-polluting, old and inefficient coal-fired power plants
of the fifties and sixties of the 20th century.
As such, the project does open the way for the country's transition to more sustainable power generation infrastructure and also helps meet the rapidly growing demand
for energy in developing economies.
