Schneider Electric launches home energy solution made from recycled ocean plastic

Rueil-Malmaison, France-based Schneider Electric, which focuses on the digital transformation of energy management and automation, has launched the first home energy solution made from ocean plastic and has updated product packaging to strengthen its commitment to sustainability.

Schneider's Merten line of sockets and switches now features materials made from polyamide fishing nets recycled from the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea

The company partnered with DSM Engineered Materials in Troy, Michigan, to transform discarded fishing nets into advanced technical plastics that can be used in electrical equipment

According to a press release, DSM works with local communities in India to recycle and collect fishing nets, which are then cut, washed, squeezed and inspected before being sent to DSM for processing into Akulon Repurposed compound
.

Schneider says the new Merten product range helps reduce the approximately 640,000 tonnes of fishing nets discarded in the ocean each year and is the first step towards making its range more sustainable
