SABIC reports that its Functional Forms facility in Bergen op Zoom, the Netherlands, has been certified under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS program to offer a new range of Lexan film and sheet products based on certified renewable feedstocks
.
The new product integrates with the company's existing Trucircle program and responds to the growing global demand for sustainable materials in an increasingly circular plastics economy
.
“We are proud to be the first in the industry to receive ISCC PLUS certification for renewable polycarbonate film and sheet products,” said Bart Kiekens, Head of the European Electrical and Electronic Films Division of SABIC’s Functional Components business unit.
Lexan film and sheet customers provide an effective option to strengthen their environmental balance and achieve ambitious sustainability goals
.
"
ISCC PLUS certification recognizes the implementation of a mass balance accounting system that tracks the flow of materials in complex supply chains from raw materials to final products by following predefined transparent rules
.
These rules then define whether a product can be classified as renewable or cyclic
.
For SABIC, this means that for every ton of renewable or recycled feedstocks input to replace fossil feedstocks in the production process, approximately one ton of output materials can be classified as renewable or recycled feedstocks
.
The mass balance approach also enables OEMs to document and quantify the sustainability of their applications made with these certified materials
.
In addition, SABIC conducted a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) evaluating the environmental performance of the renewable energy route versus the conventional fossil route at the 'cradle-to-gate' and 'cradle-to-gate' plus end-of-life levels, and relying on The PAS (Public Specified Approach to Quantifying the Carbon Footprint of Products) 2050 method for bio-carbon accounting
.
The results show that every kilogram of SABIC polycarbonate resin based on certified renewable feedstocks has the potential to reduce fossil consumption by up to 35% and reduce application carbon footprint by up to 60%
.
Overall, this also makes a significant contribution to SABIC's mitigation of the impact of its products on climate change
.
Alda Shabanaj, Product Manager, Films and Mass Transportation Europe, SABIC said: “Our new bio-based Lexan film and sheet products are made from polycarbonate resins, partly derived from second-generation feedstocks, and have no direct competition with the food chain
.
Our materials help our customers create value through durable and recyclable application solutions across multiple industries
.
"
Based on certified renewable feedstocks, SABIC's new Lexan polycarbonate film and sheet products are produced at the Bergen op Zoom facility, sold globally, and targeted for demanding applications in a range of markets, including building and construction , electrical and electronics, automotive, mass transit and specialty glass
