In a further push to develop new sustainable plastic solutions for its Trucircle product range, Sabic has announced a new collaboration with Malaysia-based plastic recycling company HHI to produce the first ever sustainable plastics through advanced recycling of recycled blended and used ocean plastics.
Certified circular polymer
.
HHI’s partners, mainly in Malaysia, recycle plastic waste from waterways that feed the ocean and inland areas within a 50km radius of the ocean, and the new materials will be incorporated into products by Sabic’s customers in the coming months
.
To produce polymers, recycled waste plastics are sent to HHI, where they are converted into pyrolysis oil through an advanced recycling process
.
Sabic then uses the pyrolysis oil as a feedstock for the production of new, cycle-certified polymers that can partially replace traditional fossil materials
.
The material has been certified Ocean Zero Plastic, and HHI is the first organization to receive certification confirming that the material it recycles meets ocean restrictions
.
HHI has created a five-stage model to facilitate the transition to a circular economy, including collecting ocean plastic through its network; converting waste into usable materials; working with partners to develop new products; providing customers with a sustainable materials platform; and promoting A generation of consumers who choose to use these sustainable materials
.
Kian Seah, CEO of HHI, said: “The company uses this model as a guide for everything we do, from business planning and working with partners like Sabic, to ecological initiatives
.
We believe we are well positioned to work towards a cleaner future.
, see plastics as a valuable resource in the value chain
.
”
A new circular polymer made from ocean plastic is the latest addition to the fSabic Trucircle product range
.
Launched in 2019, Sabic's Trucircle product range covers mechanically recycled products, certified circular products for advanced recycling of used plastics and certified renewable energy products from bio-based feedstocks, as well as design for recyclability and closed-loop recycling programs
