Russian telecommunications company Rostelecom has built the first submarine fiber-optic cable
to Kaliningrad.
The new undersea connection extends from Gingishep (in Leningrad Oblast, Russia) to the Russian-exclusive area
between Poland and Lithuania on the Baltic coast.
Gazprom announced that the new fiber optic system "will ensure independence and increase the reliability of connecting the westernmost regions to the federal digital infrastructure," since previously only land trunk routes were used to pass through other countries
.
The submarine cable system, Kingisepp-Kaliningrad, is 1,115 kilometers long, has a capacity of 100Gbps and can be expanded to 8Tbps

Mikhail Oseyevsky, president of Rostelecom, emphasized the complexity of the project: "There are 50 intersections
between the laying of fiber optic cables in the Baltic Sea waters and gas pipelines, power cables and communication cables in the region.
