Rosatom, Russia's state atomic energy company, revealed this week that it is ready to work with partners from the United States, Europe and Asia to build a nuclear power plant
in Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia is trying to build a nuclear power plant with two reactors that will generate 2 to 3.
2 gigawatts of electricity to meet the country's demand
for electricity.
Rosatom said Saudi Arabia could decide who would build its first nuclear power plant (NPP)
in 2020-2021.
The statement comes after Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said Riyadh was considering uranium for nuclear enrichment
.
This follows the Guardian reporting in April that Saudi Arabia's first nuclear reactor was ready, but Riyadh had not complied with safeguards required by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA
).
Saudi Arabia, which is seeking to expand its energy mix, has been in talks with the United States for months on a bilateral nuclear cooperation agreement that will allow Riyadh to continue its civilian nuclear program
.
Previously, Saudi media reported that Riyadh would announce the results
