Rosatom plans to deploy the world's only floating nuclear power unit (FPU), Akademik Lomonosov
, at a major nuclear facility located in Chukotka Pevek, Russia's Far East.
According to reports, Akademik Lomonosov will first be transported to Murmansk, where nuclear fuel will be loaded into
its reactor.
Rosatom said the first criticalization of the reactor is scheduled for the fall
of 2018.
Vitaly Trutnev, Director of Construction and Operations at Rosatom, said: "This is an important milestone for our project and for the nuclear industry at large, as floating nuclear power plants will supply electricity and heat to remote areas, promoting growth and sustainability
.
”
Currently, Akademik Lomonosov has set sail from the Baltic shipyard and is on its way to Chukotka Pevek
, whose final destination is in the Russian Far East.
Pevek is carrying out all necessary construction works to establish the shore infrastructure, including docks, hydraulic engineering structures and other structures, ready to be used
upon the arrival of Akademik Lomonosov.
The floating nuclear power plant is expected to be commissioned
in the summer of 2019.
It will replace Pevek's aging Bilibino nuclear power plant and Chaunsk coal-fired power plant
.
This represents annual savings of around 50,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions
compared to current levels.
After being connected to the grid, the Akademik Lomonosov will become the northernmost nuclear installation
in the world.
According to reports, the life cycle of nuclear power units is 40 years, which may be extended to 50 years
.
After decommissioning, the nuclear power unit will be towed to a special deconstruction and recovery facility
