Renewables accounted for 46.
3 percent of Germany's electricity consumption in 2020, up 3.
8 percentage points from 2019, partly due to falling demand due to the
coronavirus crisis, the German energy and water economics association BDEW said on Monday.
BDEW said, "The share of renewable energy has risen
again this year.
But lower usage masks the fact that
renewables aren't expanding fast enough.
”
Electricity consumption itself in 2020 fell by 4.
4%
year-on-year.
The high share reflects the efforts
of Europe's largest economy to curb climate-warming emissions from coal-fired power plants by expanding wind and solar power generation.
BDEW explained that the corona effect is most prominent
because operators react to the priority supply of renewable energy on the grid.
Due to falling demand for electricity, conventional operators have scaled back fossil fuel generation to avoid overproduction
due to the inability to store electricity in large quantities.
BDEW notes that there are also favorable wind and sun patterns that drive increased production, but this effect can change from year to year
.
Germany wants to increase the share of renewables in its electricity mix to 65 percent by 2030 and just completed a green law reform bill this week to step up efforts
.
BDEW also provided total electricity generation in 2020, producing approximately 564.
5 TWh, 6.
5%
less than in 2019.
Solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, hydroelectric and waste treatment plants totaled 251.
7 TWh, up from 241.
