Muhammad Al-Taani, secretary general of the Arab Renewable Energy Council (AREC), said renewable energy meets more than 20 percent of Jordan's electricity needs, making the kingdom a leader
in the Arab world's energy transition.
Jordanian news agency Petra quoted Al-Taani as saying that Jordan's geographical location is seen as an economic catalyst
for its future energy transition in the Middle East and its role in developing electricity infrastructure and interconnection between Arab countries.
According to Al-Taani, the Arab world is expected to invest about $1 trillion
in renewable energy and green hydrogen by 2040, as countries in the region, including Jordan, have taken steps to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
AREC was created in 2011 by 16 Arab countries in Amman, Jordan, representing all stakeholders
in the renewable energy sector in the Arab world.
Its aim is to promote the use of green energy and investment in
this area.
Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Saleh Kharabsheh had revealed in November that the country had set a target to expand the share of electricity from renewables to more than 50 percent by 2030 as the country sought to increase the use
of local energy.
