According to a new report by Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), companies currently committed to participating in RE100 need to spend about $94 billion to meet their clean targets
by 2030.
RE100 companies need to spend $94 billion to meet their cleaning goals by 2030
The report said the funding was enough to produce 172 terawatt hours of renewable energy and help install 87 gigawatts of new clean capacity
through power purchase agreements (PPAs).
However, the report argues that 125 companies are more likely to adopt a variety of different mechanisms to address the current renewable energy shortage, including PPAs, certificates, on-site generation and utility contracts
.
RE100 signatories, including IKEA, Aviva and BT, currently consumed around 163 terawatt hours of electricity in 2016, more than the entire Swedish population
.
The report predicts that RE100 contracted companies will grow to at least 223 terawatt hours
of electricity demand by 2030, based on historical growth patterns.
BNEF analyst Kyle Harrison said: "Clean energy demand from these companies will catalyze billions of dollars in clean energy investment
.
Businesses can have a real say in the design of electricity markets
.
”
RE100 is a global initiative that works with and supports companies to help them use 100% renewable energy
across all of their operations.
