The Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) said on Friday that a total of 12.
78 GW of wind capacity
was auctioned globally in the second quarter of 2021.
That's nearly a six-fold increase from 2.
17 GW a year ago and a significant increase
from the 7 GW in tenders and auctions in the first quarter of 2021.
GWEC noted that the pandemic affected auction schedules for the first two quarters of 2020, with auction activity in major markets being postponed to the third quarter
of 2020.
In the second quarter of 2021, offshore wind accounted for the majority of capacity granted, totalling 8.
5 GW
.
GWEC said this shows the cost competitiveness of offshore wind, whose decarbonization potential is being recognized
by countries around the world.
According to GWEC Market Intelligence, 4.
2 GW of onshore capacity was awarded globally during this period, almost evenly distributed between China and Europe, with capacity mainly acquired through auctions, mainly in Germany, followed by Poland and Italy
