Covestro is further developing Continuous Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites (CFRTP) products and capacities in response to market trends and to meet the growing needs of custome.
Mae\zio™ CFRTP composites are made from continuous carbon fiber thermoplastic resins such as polycarbona.
Currently, Covestro Leverkusen laboratory is researching a brand new production line to develop new products with different carbon fiber and resin combinations, and plans to mass-produce them at the production site in Markt Bibart in southern Germa.
“We see a strong demand for lightweight, thin and aesthetically pleasing composites, and thermoplastic composites like Mae\zio™ meet these demands,” said Lisa Ketelsen, head of the thermoplastic composites business at Covest.
"To meet growing application demands, we need a broader product portfolio with different matrix materials and properti.
Development of new thermoplastic composite materials
Development of new thermoplastic composite materialsOne of the products under development is CFRTP based on thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), which has excellent chemical resistance and flexibility over a wide temperature ran.
Thermoplastic composites are reported to be able to significantly increase the production speed of mass production, and can be molded and formed in nearly one shot, thereby eliminating the need for many secondary operatio.
Furthermore, due to their inherent recyclability, they are ideal for the growing demand for sustainable material solutio.
Strengthen the professional ability of technical processing
Strengthen the professional ability of technical processingAt the same time, Covestro has invested in new hybrid injection molding machines for CFRTP plants in Germany and China to consolidate the processing technology of complex 3D composite parts, thereby supporting application development in the indust.
A hybrid injection molding machine combines thermoforming of composite semi-finished parts with in-mold injection molding for a fully automated one-step process technology that reduces production time and increases the efficiency of mass production of composite par.
Currently, Covestro is working closely with its machining partners such as Krauss Maffei and Engel to provide comprehensive support to customers in their product development proce.
