Prysmian achieves two technological breakthroughs in HVDC transmission
Prysmian today announced the successful development and testing of new 700 kV MI-PPL (integral impregnation) and 600 kV extruded (cross-linked polyethylene) cable systems for HVDC applications, achieving two record-breaking milestones
in power transmission.
"This is the first time that such a high level of voltage
has been achieved in the cable industry.
" Massimo Battaini, Senior Vice President of Energy Projects at Prysmian, said: "This is also a first breakthrough in cable technology, enabling HVDC transmission systems to achieve more than 3 GW per cable bipolar and more than
twice the transmission capacity of current DC cable systems.
”
These achievements demonstrate the robustness and reliability of AC polyethylene and monolithically impregnated PPL technology for HVDC applications, capable of achieving the highest voltages
.
The overall impregnated PPL technology highlights the inherent potential
of Prysmian's patented PPL technology.
The voltage upgrade brought about by the achievement also increased transmission capacity by 15%, surpassing the previous highest voltage of 525 kV cross-linked polyethylene technology and the current 600 kV high-performance PPL technology
.
These milestones are further evidence of Prysmian's commitment and leadership in cable technology innovation following Prysmian's announcement in December 2015 and March 2016 of the successful testing of 525 kV DC XLPE and 525 kV P-Laser cable solutions
.
To achieve new voltage levels, Prysmian leverages its extensive material knowledge and improved understanding of manufacturing methods to successfully meet the challenges of optimising industrial processes with stringent technical parameters and providing complete systems
of cables and accessories with the best dielectric properties.
HVDC cables are an important component
for delivering sustainable energy systems for the transmission of large quantities of electricity over long distances.
Prysmian has been at the forefront of developing innovative technical solutions for power grids, providing cable systems
for HVDC applications.
