Portugal's National Communications Authority (ANACOM) has held its first working meeting on the project to replace the existing submarine cable connecting the mainland and the Azores and the autonomous region of Madeira (CAM), with the aim of analyzing the technical and financial feasibility
of the project.
ANACOM stressed the need to deploy this new submarine cable system in mid-2018, as the Columbus III and Atlantis-2 cables are expected to reach their useful life
between 2024 and 2025.
The regulator said the Portuguese state "must set a strategic direction on this issue, involving the central government and two local governments, in an effort to mobilize EU funds
.
" ”
The European Investment Bank has reportedly agreed to provide Cabo Verde with $25 million to help it build the EllaLink submarine cable system in response to issues such as
the imminent retirement of Atlantis-2.
It is expected that the Portuguese authorities will submit the final proposal
on the technical and financial feasibility of the submarine cable project and the possible paths by December 31, 2019.
