Europe's polyurethane flexible foam producers expect output in the industry to fall by 30% to 80% compared to normal in the coming weeks due to the impact of the coronavirus crisis and national lockdowns
.
EuroPUR, the European association of flexible polyurethane foam manufacturers, warned that this could lead to more factory closures, irrespective of national policy
.
The association said its investigation showed that all dedicated flexible foam companies supplying the automotive industry had closed
.
Companies that are still in operation focus their output on medical mattresses and online sales
.
But EuroPUR warned: "These volumes are far from making up for the loss of production in other industries
.
"Some companies that manufacture medical mattresses are starting to report difficulties purchasing bed covers
.
These shortages are likely to intensify in the coming weeks, as "the availability of labor and tighter and more stringent controls at border crossings could lead to delays in shipments
.
EuroPUR surveyed more than 30 companies in Europe to draw the following simple conclusions:
France: All factories closed due to lack of demand
.
Spain and Portugal: Spain will open some medical foam production, but most factories are expected to be closed until mid-May
.
Portugal has closed all factories and companies are expected to reopen by mid-April
.
Turkey: Most PU foam factories to close until April 6 at the earliest
.
Italy: The only operating PU foam plant is medical related
.
The rest are closed
.
Russia: All factories are closed
.
On March 28, Russia began a one-week nationwide paid leave, except for the medical industry and factories in the chemical and refining industries
.
Poland: Demand for exports is at 50% of normal, possibly 20% of normal in April
.
Companies can operate with precautions in place
.
It is unclear whether the bubble companies will benefit from the country's bailout of the company
.
Hungary, Czech Republic, Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia: All companies have significantly reduced capacity
.
Greece and Cyprus: greatly reduced capacity
.
Romania and Bulgaria: greatly reduced capacity
Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea region: The factory can operate and the reduction in production is not as great compared to other regions
.
UK and Ireland: All UK factories are open but at reduced capacity
.
The Irish factory is continuing to produce medical foam
.
Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan: Factories are open, but capacity is reduced
.
