Materials giant Sabic will introduce a thinner Elcres HTV150A amorphous polycarbonate (PC) copolymer-based dielectric film
.
The material is suitable for traction inverters, on-board chargers and capacitors for electric compressors in hybrid, plug-in hybrid and pure electric vehicles (xEV)
.
The 3-µm film is 40% thinner than Sabic's recently announced 5-µm film, which can further reduce size and weight and increase design flexibility by increasing the energy density of the capacitor
.
Furthermore, like the 5-µm Elcres HTV150A film, this exceptionally thin film maintains stable performance at operating temperatures up to 150°C and addresses the critical performance gap of conventional PP films above 135°C
.
With higher energy density, this new level of thermal performance helps customers increase the adoption of SiC power modules in smaller package sizes, thereby reducing weight, while providing the efficiency and performance consumers need to increase xEV adoption
.
Greg Stoddard, technical director of resins and new chemistry at Sabic, said: "When we launched our 5-µm Elcres HTV150A film last year, we promised to develop thinner gauges to meet different capacitor voltage requirements, and we've now delivered on that.
Promise
.
The new 3-µm film can help customers design smaller package sizes, thereby avoiding the use of active cooling systems and allowing the film to operate at lower temperatures
.
As OEMs design electric and hybrid vehicles that require Operating at voltage, the new 3-µm films can help differentiate by offering tailored performance
.
The breakdown of voltage performance helps automakers match capacitor performance to the needs of different vehicles in their product line
.
”
Elcres HTV150A dielectric film is the industry's first capacitor film that is stable at operating temperatures from -40°C to 150°C and frequencies up to 100kHz, while providing stable capacitance, insulation resistance and dielectric properties (dielectric constant of 2.
9 with a loss factor of 0.
002)
.
Other key properties include high breakdown strength over the full temperature range, good self-healing, and adhesion to aluminum and zinc
.
The film is customer-proven for use with film foils and metallized electrodes
.
Capacitors fabricated with 3-µm and 5-µm metallized films pass standard electrical and life tests at 150°C for 2000 hours with low capacitance variation and stable insulation resistance
.
